https://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/expressway/config_guide/X8-11/Cisco-Meeting-Server-2-4-with-Cisco-Expressway-Cisco Expressway Series provides various functionalities and services to secure and extend access to unified communication and collaboration services for users outside the enterprise network. Among the functionalities offered, two of the most important are:
Endpoint registration: Cisco Expressway provides a secure and reliable way for remote endpoints, such as mobile devices and teleworkers, to register with the Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM) and other call control servers in the enterprise network. By registering with CUCM, endpoints can receive and make calls, access messaging and presence services, and collaborate with other users in the organization. Cisco Expressway supports different protocols for endpoint registration, such as SIP and H.323, and provides NAT traversal and firewall traversal capabilities to enable communication across different networks and domains.
Interworking of SIP and H.323: Cisco Expressway acts as a protocol translator and interworking device between SIP and H.323 networks. This allows endpoints and call control servers using different protocols to communicate with each other, without the need for costly upgrades or replacements of existing infrastructure. For example, an H.323 endpoint can call a SIP endpoint, or a CUCM server can route a call from a SIP trunk to an H.323 gateway, and Cisco Expressway can translate the signaling and media streams between the two protocols.
In addition to these two functions, Cisco Expressway also offers other services such as voice and video transcoding, intercluster extension mobility, and secure remote access to web conferencing and instant messaging. Voice and video transcoding enables endpoints with different codecs or bitrates to communicate with each other by converting the audio and video streams on-the-fly. Intercluster extension mobility allows users to roam between different clusters of CUCM and maintain their device profiles, settings, and services. Secure remote access to web conferencing and instant messaging is provided through Cisco Webex and Jabber, which are integrated with Cisco Expressway to enable secure and seamless collaboration across different devices and networks.
