To create an AWS Workspace, a user directory is required.

AWS Workspaces is a managed, secure, cloud-based solution that allows users to access virtual desktops from any device, anywhere. The user directory provides a central location for managing users, their authentication credentials, and authorization permissions. It also provides features such as single sign-on, multifactor authentication, and group policies to manage user access to resources.

A VPC with a private and public subnet is not required to create an AWS Workspace, but it is recommended. This is because Workspaces requires connectivity to the Internet to operate correctly. A public subnet provides Internet connectivity to Workspaces, while a private subnet provides additional security and isolation for Workspaces.

A NAT instance on the customer side is also not required to create an AWS Workspace. A NAT instance is typically used to enable instances in a private subnet to access the Internet. However, Workspaces uses a managed NAT gateway provided by AWS, which does not require any customer-side configuration.

An AWS Direct Connect connection is also not required to create an AWS Workspace. AWS Direct Connect is a dedicated network connection from a customer's data center to AWS. It provides a private, high-speed connection to AWS services and can improve network performance and security. However, it is not necessary for creating an AWS Workspace.
